Based: Bradford

Jon Payne, CMF AdviserJon specialises in working with younger singers: in churches, schools, and community settings. He is Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music at Bradford Cathedral. He was Director of Music at St Thomas' Church, Stourbridge, and Director of Armonico Consort's Academy Youth Choirs. He has worked for the Royal School of Church Music and the National Foundation for Youth Music, and led the music for the 2013 Birmingham Diocesan Clergy Conference.

Jon read Music at the University of Surrey, specialising in conducting and composition. He studied organ with David Wright, Geoffrey Morgan, and Patrick Russill.

In 1997, he was appointed Director of the renowned Wenhaston Boys' Choir in Suffolk. From 1999-2001, he was Organ Scholar at Norwich Cathedral, playing for weekday and Sunday services, directing the choirs when required, and taking part in a number of broadcasts and recordings.

He then moved into music education, working as Choral Animateur for both Norfolk Music Education Service and, through the British Federation of Choirs, Solihull Music Service. He was Director of Music in the rural Broadside Parishes of Norfolk, and Assistant Organist at St Alphege, Solihull, before moving to Stourbridge in 2009.

As a conductor and workshop leader, Jon has worked with over 150 choirs and singing projects, as well as undertaking arts management roles as Chief Executive of the Throckmorton Literary Festival, Acting Director of Birmingham's Youth Music Action Zone, and Event Logistics Manager for the national events team of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. In 2013, he co-directed a performance involving 1,500 children at the Royal Albert Hall, and was part of the team directing the music at the Royal School of Church Music's International Summer School in York Minster. He founded and directed the ground-breaking school 'Boys Make Noise' programme in Worcestershire, demonstrating the power singing has to change not just individual lives, but the educational culture of whole organisations.

Jon is particularly keen to help churches and primary schools develop closer musical and working links, sharing expertise and resources to encourage good choral singing. He also has a wealth of experience in helping parishes to think about music 'as mission' and to develop congregational and community singing.

He also helps churches with their 'visioning', making short- and longer-term plans for the development of their music, in consultation with clergy, musicians, wardens, PCC members and others.

Jon holds the DipChD (Diploma in Choral Directing) from the Royal College of Organists; the ACertCM (Archbishops' Certificate in Church Music) from the Guild of Church Musicians; and has further qualifications in music and psychology. He is a member of the Order of St Herman.
